Earth Day

Attachment-1.jpeg

eARTH DAY - Every Day Matters.

How you shop has always mattered, but this time in quarantine has made it undeniable. The world is watching nature comeback while we are kept in - a natural que to do more (or less) to maintain our symbiotic relationship with nature. We have complied a short list of local businesses that compliment a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Compost collective kc

DID YOU KNOW NEARLY HALF OF YOUR GARBAGE IS FOOD?

DID YOU ALSO KNOW THAT FOOD WASTE COULD BE SEPARATED OUT FROM YOUR TRASH, PICKED UP AT YOUR CURB, AND THEN TURNED INTO NUTRIENT RICH COMPOST?

The answer is the foundation that Compost Collective KC has built itself on a response to better support the lack of attention the environment was receiving. The collective concept was brought to Kansas City by Meredith McCallister after moving from Boston and missing her previous collection she had grown used to. So McCallister and her husband brought the concept to KC - making composting easy for the subscriber. When you support this local business, you are supporting the larger initiative to support our planet by helping keep food waste out of landfills and sending it back into the earth where it came from! Compost Collective is always a no contact process, you put your full buckets curbside on collection day and the collective pick up, leaving you with a clean bag and clean bucket.

scout & cellar

Scout & Cellar is a female founded MLM company. After working as a commercial litigator, Scout & Cellar founder Sarah Shadonix decided to follow a passion and become a sommelier. It was during her sommelier studies that Shadonix discovered it wasn’t uncommon for wine makers to use things such as pesticides, added sugars or even “mega purple,” a color corrector. So Shadonix’s decided to start a wine company that would sell “clean-crafted wines” using grapes grown with no synthetic pesticides, vilifying with no chemical additives, not adding sugar or sweetener, and contain no more than 100ppm of sulfites. Sarah’s sommelier background allows her to special choose not just great tasting organic wines but they are lab tested to meet the S&C standard of clean.

Scout and Cellar wines sell for $18-$50 and can be purchased online or through our local constituent Margi Rusten. If any of you would like to stock up on healthy wines that would be delivered to your doorstep, enjoy free shipping on $99 or more, 10% off a case, 5% off 6-11 bottles by shopping online at — www.scoutandcellar.com/margirusten

fARM TO FRIDGE

Along with conserving fossil fuels by shopping for food that has been grown close to home, family farms produce less environmental waste in the form of carbon monoxide, pesticide use and chemical fertilizers. Additionally, our local farmers markets also operate in the open air and that's do not require electricity or heating.

Located off Wornall Rd, Brookside Farmer’s Market offers our community to enjoy their open air shopping experience from 6ft away! Support Kansas City’s original farmer’s market offering organic, grower-only by visiting them at a close distance or placing an order online. Organic farming is better for the soil, the environment, and your body!

We also encourage you to visit Overland Park Farmer’s Market, they have recently added a drive-thru option, located in the Overland Park convention center parking lot. And since making viewing suggestions is of current trend we wanted to include an Earth Day recommendation that anyone reading this can enjoy from the comfort of home and that is to stream The Biggest Little Farm on Amazon a feel good film that follows a couple of former city dwellers through their successes and failures as they work to develop a sustainable farm on 200 acres outside of Los Angeles. You can't help but feel hopeful while watching the desolate land that they purchased as it begins to transform and thrive.
