On Choosing Light Over Dark
Words by: Maggie Laubscher | Music by: Abby Yemm
As we approach the winter solstice, we begin seeking out light more and more. Afternoon sun, candlelight, nighttime fires, holiday fairy lights – bring it all to us. Today, the light is there for the taking, without effort. Not only is it bright and sunny outside, it’s also Saint Lucia’s Day.
The Scandinavian holiday of Saint Lucia ushers in the winter holiday season with its festival of lights. It’s a day meant to bring light and love to the darkest time of year. At the center of its celebrations is candlelight. Girls are costumed in long white dresses with red ribbon sashes and crowns of lighted candles, as they walk in parades and hold family feasts.
And so, we find the light. And for the days beyond Saint Lucia’s Day, keep this poem at hand – it’s one our favorites…
Power
There are days
when the light flickers
and then I remember
I am the light.
I go in and
switch it back on.
