Happy Pride Month

by: Maggie Laubscher

Happy Pride Month, Nellies! It’s a month for freedom, progress and acceptance. It’s also about the fight to move forward, and that is front of mind for us right now. With the Stonewall Riots in 1969, Pride Month started as a fight against police brutality. Fast forward to today, and Pride Month continues as a fight for equality. We are part of that fight. We stand strong in our belief that queer rights are human rights. So let’s keep fighting the good fight, pulling up and speaking out, shall we?

3 Things We Love This Pride Month…

AfroQueer Podcast

We are hooked on this podcast right now. It features beautiful, powerful stories about the African LGBTQ community. Host Selly Thiam is calm, confident and engaging, and the show is really well-produced. Definitely worth a listen.

HBO Digital Pride Fest

To celebrate Pride Month, HBO is throwing a virtual festival of sorts. It kicks off this Thursday, June 18, with a live dance party, and continues through June 28 with a performance by Janelle Monae. Todrick Hall, Kim Petras, a queer comedy night and a drag queen story hour are among other programming during the fest.

Black Publishing Power

Let’s buy some books! For ourselves, for our friends, for the father figures in our lives. This week, participate in the #blackoutbestsellerlist challenge: buy two books by Black writers to help stack bestseller lists with Black voices. We learned of it through the lovely @inkandfable’s Instagram - a KC-based writer and book reviewer. We are buying LGBTQ-themed or authored books in support of Pride Month. This and this are both good picks. And here is a list of queer bookstores to shop.
