Hi, Nellies! Meet Megan Folmsbee, our newest Nelle writer. Megan is a KC journalist with an impeccable eye and endless style inspo. She is also a hella smart writer. — Nelle HQ

With warmer weather upon us, I can’t help but make dreamy Pinterest boards, plan vacays and outings, and write all the springy posts- in hopes of convincing Mother Nature we need her gifts now! Of course, the spring and summer season wouldn’t be right without the quintessential picnic-day. In anticipation, read through my favorite shops, artists, and markets to help fill your Kansas City picnic basket…

The Basket

The most picturesque picnic vessel is waiting for you at a quaint shop in Brookside, owned and operated by blogger Amanda Watters. Homesong Market is a go-to for all simple-living and zero-waste needs. Choose from a variety of open-faced baskets, or the gorgeous traditional picnic basket by Millstream.

The Blanket

Fiber artist and Kansas Citian, Karrie Dean says on her website, happyhabitat.net, that “blankets are the perfect canvas.” And, she’s absolutely right. The ideal back-drop to your picnic daydream is one of Dean’s cotton pieces. With numerous patterns and colors to choose from, and ethical production, I’m confident your instagram aesthetic will be loving this one. My personal favorite is, “Sunny.”

The Snacks

How could you possibly choose one? A plethora of options for your picnic-company is vital!

Blackhole Bakery is my top choice for pastries. Located at 5531 Troost Ave, it’s just a 5 minute drive to Loose Park (the picnic location you’ve been looking for), and has plenty of sweet, savory, and doughy items for you to add to your basket. Order one of everything or, if you’re doing it my way, stock up on the cinnamon rolls- they’re insane.

We’ve all seen the Pinterest-worthy picnic… meaning, we all know there has to be a charcuterie board involved. My favorite stop for all things cheese and such is The Pairing: Wine and Grocer in the Crossroads. While The Pairing features a roundup of natural wines as well, head to the back of the shop where you’ll find the “grocer.” Of course, @kclocaleats featured them not too long ago, so you know those boards have to be stellar.

Last, but certainly not least is Taco Naco KC. Who says there has to be “picnic specific” snacks? Not this girl. Recently featured in KC Magazine, Taco Naco KC is being raved about all over the city. With a new brick and mortar space up and running, their Market and Taqueria at 8220 Metcalf Avenue, is a must-stop on the way to the park.

The Drinks

I’d be foolish not to mention it. Natural wine is the only way to go on this pretty-picnic day. Big Mood Natural Wines in the Crossroads is the “it” spot for natty (I think that’s what we’re calling it now). Select your perfect sip from reds, whites and all the rest. My favorite, and the perfect summer sip is Calcarius Bombigiana for $25.

And of course, for those of you not over 21, I suggest KC’s cutest little grocery store, Nature’s Own for sparkling waters, juices, and drinks to make you feel fancy!

The Decor, on a budget…

Glassware: My pro-tip is to head to your nearest goodwill, city thrift, or antique store! The selection of pretty and affordable glasses, dishes, and cutlery (even candle-sticks are a cute addition) will save you major bucks on your idyllic picnic… and those Instagram pics of course.

Flowers: Every great picnic has at least one bouquet of flowers, or 8 if it feels right. So, I’m going to do it… I’m going to spoil the secret… Trader Joes is it! Build a bouquet for less than $10 and take your set-up to the next level. So, grab your people, your pals, and your Nellies- and run, don’t walk to put together the ultimate Kansas City picnic basket.
