Holocaust Remembrance
Words by: Maggie Laubscher | Music by: Abby Yemm
Today is Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. It’s a day to remember the horrors of the Holocaust and the anti-semitism that still runs through our culture. It’s a day to remember.
And we do. We remember the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, which showed neo-Nazis waving swastika flags and speaking out in hate against Jews. As Teen Vogue reported last year, that rally marked a turning point in modern-day anti-semitism. ‘The threats, vile hate speech and violence have continued ever since.’
We remember that in 2018, 11 people were killed in a mass shooting at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh. The murderer’s social media bio read, ‘Jews are the children of satan.’
We remember that less than one month later, high schoolers in Wisconsin went viral for posing for a photo while performing the Nazi salute.
We remember the California synagogue that was attacked in 2019.
We remember the three people killed in a kosher supermarket in Jersey City in the same year.
We remember a rabbi whose home was invaded during Hanukkah, in which five people were stabbed.
We remember.
Anti-semetic incidents are increasing around the country, with more than 2,100 acts of violence in 2019, according to the Anti-Defamation League. This was an increase of more than 12-percent, year over year.
So today, light a candle and remember. And beyond that, below are three ways you can support our Jewish community. Be well, Nellies. XO
1) Jewish Family Services
Jewish Family Services (JFS) supports the Jewish community in Greater Kansas City. Their services include counseling, a food pantry, older adult care, housing and employment assistance for those in need, and financial insecurity.
2) Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City
The Jewish Community Foundation helps to build charitable resources for the future. In 2020 alone, the group contributed over $28 million and more than 5,000 grants.
3) Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City
The Jewish Federation raises more than $5 million each year to support more than 80 Jewish programs and initiatives in Kansas City, Israel and around the world.
