Hi, Nellies! Meet Megan Folmsbee, our newest Nelle writer. Megan is a KC journalist with an impeccable eye and endless style inspo. She is also a hella smart writer. — Nelle HQ
It’s that time of year again...spring breakers are headed to the coasts and the lust for summer is stronger than ever. While taking a zoom meeting by the pool sounds like the best work-from-home gig, finding that ideal swimsuit for function and play can be complicated- let alone the issue of sustainability. Here are my top 5 picks for trendy yet sustainable and ethical swimwear:
Summersalt
Operating out of St. Louis, MO, this stunning shop is close to home. Summersalt uses recycled materials and has proved their fabric is 78% recycled polyamide. They even ship your new favorite suit in a reusable bag. With honest pricing, diverse colors and patterns, and an amazing selection of sizes, this brand is a go-to for someone who isn’t looking to spend a tiny fortune, but still wants to feel great about their ethical choice.
Jade Swim
BIPOC owned and operated, Jade Swim is not only a sustainable choice but an ode to so much more! From beautiful one pieces to sexy sets, this company has got it all and does it the right way. Jade swim uses organic and regenerated materials, and has gotten their suits Oeko-Tex certified & Azo tested- meaning there are no gross chemicals involved. My personal favorite piece is the Cava one-piece for $220.00
Youswim
Youswim has blown up in the influencer sphere this past year or so (check out Kansas City’s Hanna Benoski styling her suit below), and I’m sure you’ve seen their monochromatic pieces on your Instagram feed. Youswim is one size fits all. Yep, you heard me, and they are literally… one size fits all. Their flexible material stretches to anyone’s swimsuit needs. The famous Eva one-piece is priced at $139.00.

Arrow + Phoenix
This brand is to die for! Being the most inclusive brand I’ve found, they’ve got the vote from me. Arrow and Phoenix uses an insanely comfortable and recycled, eco-friendly fabric, and make their suits here in the U.S.. Not only do they use good-for-the-earth materials, but they also have a discount program that ensures all their worn-out suits are disposed of properly. Send your post-summer pieces to their headquarters and receieve 20% off your next one.
Reformation
We all know Reformation’s slogan: “being naked is the #1 sustainable option,” and while I agree that a skinny dipping moment is superior, sometimes that public pool calls for a little more coverage- and Reformation has it down. A more pricey option, Reformation proves why. With sustainability reports located on their website, and a full team rundown, you know who’s making that little black top and where your money is going!
Writer’s Tip:
With every great swim look comes accessories. Here’s a short list of my Kansas City favorites for summer accents…
Sunglasses from Dear Society
Jewelry from local artist, Paulina Otero
Hats from local designer, Amina Hood
An Abby Yemm playlist for you…
